En el año 79 d.C., el legendario Vesubio entró en erupción provocando la destrucción de las ciudades de Pompeya y Herculano. Mucho tiempo después, concretamente en el año 1860, el arqueólogo Giuseppe Fiorelli descubrió que una serie de huecos en la capa de ceniza habían albergado los cadáveres de la gente antes de su descomposición definitiva. Rellenando los espacios con yeso, Fiorelli obtuvo unos moldes que mostraban con gran precisión el último momento de la vida de los ciudadanos que no escaparon a la erupción.
